Why We Never Top Trees (and What to Do Instead)
A few times a year, someone calls us specifically asking for a tree to be “topped” — cutting the main branches and leader back to stubs, usually to reduce a tree’s height or because it’s grown too close to a roofline or power line. We understand the impulse. It looks like a fast, cheap way to solve a size problem. It’s also one of the worst things you can do to a tree, and we won’t do it.
What topping actually does to a tree
When you cut a major limb back to a stub instead of to a proper lateral branch or the trunk, the tree loses a huge portion of its ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, right at the moment it also has large, exposed wounds that are vulnerable to decay and pests. The tree’s survival response is to send out a burst of fast, weakly-attached new growth — called epicormic sprouts — from just below each cut.
That regrowth is the real problem. Epicormic sprouts grow in dense clusters, attach to the tree with much weaker wood than a normally developed branch, and grow back quickly, often reaching close to the tree’s original height within a few years. You end up with a tree that’s not meaningfully smaller in the long run, but is now carrying a canopy of weakly-attached branches that are significantly more likely to fail in wind or snow load than the branch structure you started with.
The wound problem
Topping cuts are large, flat, and made at a point where the tree has little ability to compartmentalize the wound effectively — unlike a proper pruning cut made just outside the branch collar, which the tree is biologically equipped to seal off. Topping cuts stay open to decay and pests for years, and that decay works its way down into the main stem, compromising the structural integrity of the whole tree over time, not just the part that was cut.
It doesn’t even solve the problem long-term
This is the part that surprises people: topping is usually done to reduce height or clear a roofline or power line, but because the regrowth comes back fast and dense, most topped trees are back to a similar height within five to ten years — except now they’re carrying a structurally weaker canopy, and they’ll need topping again, and again, in a cycle that leaves the tree progressively more hazardous and more expensive to maintain over its lifetime.
What we do instead
Crown reduction, done correctly. If a tree genuinely needs to come down in height or spread, a proper crown reduction cuts back to lateral branches large enough to take over the growth of the limb, distributing the reduction throughout the canopy rather than creating stubs. It’s slower and requires more skill, but the tree keeps a natural structure and doesn’t respond with hazardous regrowth.
Canopy raising. If the issue is clearance over a driveway, roofline, or walkway rather than overall size, raising the canopy by removing lower limbs at proper cuts solves the clearance problem without touching the tree’s overall height or structure.
Selective thinning. If the concern is a tree that feels too dense or is blocking too much light, thinning out select branches throughout the canopy — rather than cutting the top off — reduces density while preserving the tree’s natural form and structural integrity.
Removal, if it’s genuinely the wrong tree in the wrong place. Sometimes a tree really has outgrown its location — too close to the house, too close to power lines, or simply too large for the space. In that case, removal and replacement with a more appropriately sized species is a better long-term answer than topping the tree into a permanent maintenance cycle.
